Breaking Out The Machine!

Do these fabric scraps look familiar?

I wrote about them in the spring along with my other craft and health goals for the year. While I haven't been able to tackle every single one of those goals, I did manage (with the help of my good friend Annette) to complete ONE sewing project. And that was no easy task. Without her help, I would still be starring at my machine! I was basically relearning how to ride a bike so to speak. I haven't touched a sewing machine for about 13 years. My Mom bought me a machine 4 or 5 years ago that I JUST broke out of the box and used for the first time. Pathetic. I know! But it was well worth it and I ended up having a blast. (Don't worry Mom...I'll be using it a lot more now that I know what to do again!)

To break myself back into the swing of things, I chose a simple and relatively quick project out of my stash of sewing tutorials: A sewing machine mat. Which I actually did need for my machine so it wasn't a waste of time. I was finally able to use the fabric scraps I had been saving for awhile and here's how it turned out...

I have to admit that I'm really happy with the finished product. I'm sure all of you sewers out there know what I mean when I say that I now have sewing in my blood. I'm itching for another project to make!! Our little guy will be here in just a few weeks so I figure now would be a great time to make other things as I'm sure once he's here it will be hard for me to do for the first little while. I also wanted to add that the following morning after making this mat, I was able to sew up a pair of John's jean pockets that he's been asking for MONTHS to get done. This is a win-win though so of course I did it out of the goodness of my heart but also because I will no longer have to hold his keys and cell phone. I knew relearning to sew would come in handy! I don't know when I'll get around to making more things but if I do, I'll be sure to put them up for you to see. And if anyone wants to make one of these sewing machine mats for themselves, go here for the instructions (by scrolling down about 3/4 of the page).

cute mat, les! i will have to agree that it took forever for you to break that thing in. when i want to sew i have to drag my projects to mom or edie's. and you have one at your finger tips. use it for the both of us!!!

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out myself. Especially being the first thing I've sewed in over a decade. I guess I've had a few good reasons (young busy children) that have made sewing a little challenging. So yes, now I will use it for the both of us. Better yet...maybe I'll make something for you! Probably not anytime SOON but be on the look out. :)
